Education is basically the same with the USA except that they teach spanish as the mother tongue language. Public education began in Panama soon after freedom from Colombia in 1903. Education is compulsory for 6 years and is provided free by the government through the university level. Military service is not required, though one could join the military at the age of 15 to 42. Some of the collages are Universidad Latina and Universidad de Panama.
